The Trail of Governors Foundation will honor a minimum of three governors each year. The order in which they are sculpted includes an early governor, a recent governor and one from the middle. The first year’s statues will include an early governor (Mellette) and a recent governor to leave office (Miller), as well as a mid-timeline governor (Bushfield).

Collectively, artists can sculpt up to six statues per year. If total funding is secured for a sculpture before its scheduled year, all efforts will be made to ensure it is added to the current year’s list of governors. The following is the current timeline.
