visitors log many miles
on Trail of Governors.
Trail traffic increases with
31 statues leading walkers and
runners along this history and arts route.
The year 2023 was the first full year with all former governors’ statues
featured along the Trail of Governors. As such, the trail drew many
admirers as they walked, ran or drove past the statues. Many selfies
were taken in front of statues and their admirers.
The trail’s statues are fully funded, with each statue costing the Trail of
Governors Foundation about $72,000.Generous donors helped raise more
than two and a quarter million dollars to fund the commissioning of the
31 statues by South Dakota artists James Michael Maher, James Van
Nuys, John Lopez, Lee Leuning and Sherri Treeby. These statues have
been featured during 10 unveiling ceremonies. Each statue tells a story
of that particular governor’s history, era and character.
